ACSR/AW

Constructions:

Aluminium Conductors, Aluminium-Clad Steel Reinforced (ACSR/AW) is a concentric-lay-stranded conductor consisting of aluminium-clad steel central core (Alumoweld) with one or more layers of hard drawn stranded 1350-H19aluminium wires. Alumoweld is a highly resistant steel rod, covered with a thick coating of pure aluminium, which is cold-drawn to obtain wires of the required diameters.

The design and dimensions of ACSR/AW conductors are identical to those of ordinary ACSR conductors, except the steel core in ACSR conductor, which is aluminium-clad steel core in ACSR/AW.

Applications:

Aluminium Conductors, Aluminium-Clad Steel Reinforced (ACSR/AW) can be used in Medium, High and Extra-High voltage transmission lines; also used for earth wires. They are used as bare overhead transmission and as primary and secondary distribution cable.

In comparison with ACSR conductors, ACSR/AW conductors have considerable technical and economic advantages in overhead lines. Its lower weight combined with its higher current carrying capacity and corrosion protection provide a longer life cycle, reduction in energy losses and significant cost saving during the operation of the line.

ACSR/AW offers strength characteristics similar to ACSR, along with slightly greater ampacity and resistance to corrosion due to aluminium-cladding of the steel core wires.These conductors are better replacement for ACSR conductors where corrosive conditions are severe.

Applicable Standard:

Aluminium Conductors, Aluminium-Clad Steel Reinforced (ACSR/AW) is designed and tested to meet or exceed the following ASTM specifications:

  • B230 Aluminium 1350-H19 Wire for Electrical Purposes.
  • B502 Aluminium-Clad Steel Core Wire for Use in Overhead Electrical Aluminium Conductors.
  • B549 Concentric-Lay Stranded Aluminium Conductors, Aluminium-Clad Steel Reinforced for Use in Overhead Electrical Conductors
